Young Adult Issues

Young adult issues stem from the fact that this is a time of tremendous growth and change for most people. It is a time when many of us start to discover who we are, what we like and how to live our lives without our family’s daily influence. Young adults often grapple with trying to figure out what to do in the future. For many young adults, it is also the first time experiencing a serious, romantic relationship and these relationships often bring about self-doubt, questioning of our values and confusion about how to prioritize our time. These relationships can also create great heartache. The developmental stage of young adulthood is also often accompanied by having to adjust to major life changes, such as starting a new job or a new academic program or being away from family and friends for long periods of time. During this extremely important stage of life, many young adults feel inner turmoil for the first time and may begin to experience anxiety, depression and/or low self-esteem. Concerning symptoms that might appear include:

  • Insomnia and excessive sleeping
  • Persistent aches, pains, or headaches
  • Overeating or loss of appetite
  • Feelings of guilt, worthlessness, or helplessness
  • Panic attacks
  • Constant feeling of being overwhelmed by responsibilities
  • Feelings of dread
  • Inability to make decisions
  • Substance misuse
  • Social withdrawal
